This Rupert & Rothschild Red Classique is made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. A truly classic combination, the kind that essentially only occurs in French Bordeaux. Baron Edmond de Rothschild, well-established in the Old World, was therefore eager to apply his passion and expertise to the countries of the New World. His meeting with Dr. Rupert is the ideal basis for a joint venture on the sun-drenched soil of South Africa.
Rupert & Rothschild Red Classique is a phenomenal wine! Seductive black fruit immediately tantalizes your nose. Aromas of red plums, raspberries, and cherries are prominent, followed by earthy notes and pencil shavings, and layered complexity. The smooth, silky texture supports caramel, walnut, tea leaf nuances, and dark chocolate. This multidimensional wine is the ultimate pairing with, for example, beef tenderloin paired with roasted beetroot.
The grapes were hand-picked from early February to late March 2018. A season with less rain than normal, followed by a remarkably cooler ripening period, resulted in smaller berries with a delicate fruit expression. Fermented in stainless steel tanks. Skin pump-overs took place three times a day to ensure a gentle and delicate extraction of color and tannins. Selective skin contact was applied after fermentation, and the wine was racked for malolactic fermentation in cement tanks prior to aging. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Furthermore, the wine has an aging potential of at least 7 years from the vintage.
In May 1997, the founders formalized their partnership. At the time, they found the perfect spot: a quiet farmhouse in Franschhoek at the foot of the Simonsberg. And they committed themselves to a simple and elegant approach. In short, a distinctly French approach. To create three carefully crafted wines – two Bordeaux blends and one Chardonnay – that would express the full potential of the local vines. Ultimately, these have become iconic wines that set their own standards – rare, special, unique wines. Wines that taste of progress and prosperity, family and friendship. Wines made not for profit or pride, but simultaneously out of love for the craft and, naturally, the pleasure of the final product. Summarized, the Rupert & Rothschild Red Classique demonstrates and lets you taste all of this like no other!
