The Pipoli Rosato Anglianico comes from southern Italy and is made from the Anglianico grape. It is a rosé, which is why the wine is pinkish-red in color. The wine has a delicious fruity aroma with plenty of red fruit such as raspberries and strawberries. Take a sip, and then the wine truly comes to life. Really loose. That is insane! You taste a powerful flavor of red fruit, and yet it is fresh and fruity, with a full, complex layering of flavors. The mouthfeel is a little oily and reminds me of candied fruit like cherries and a chili pepper. The wine has a nice, fresh acidity and is not sweet. And as a bonus, you taste subtle volcanic minerality.
Try something different from the thin Provençal rosé wines. Go for a more powerful Italian wine, and you won't want anything else!
Basilica, a region between Campania and Apulia, in southern Italy. Normally, that is the ideal habitat for wine grapes, but Basilicata puts up a fight. Thanks to its rugged and mountainous character, the area accounts for one of the lowest yields per hectare in the country. No more than 500,000 hectoliters of wine comes from there.
And the vineyards where Aglianico thrives—situated on the slopes of Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano—prove even less generous. Aglianico del Vulture, the only DOC in the region, accounts for only 3 percent of the total. Consequently, this red is rarely found outside the country's borders. Let alone that Rosato is made from the grape.
But at Pipoli, they don't care about that. There, they turned the Aglianico into a rosé with plenty of red fruit, distinct cherry, a touch of sweetness, a pleasant dry-spicy finish, plus a fiery hint of pepper. The volcano is still smoldering a bit…
Try pairing this wine with, for example, grilled white meat from the barbecue, carpaccio, and hearty meal salads.
Wine critic Luca Maroni is very enthusiastic about the wine and has the rosé. Pipoli Rosato Anglianico rated 95 points!
