Yes, the Riesling is still “the King” in Alsace. A powerful grape with very pronounced aromas. A kind of trinity of floral and honey aromas, alongside citrus scents, but often with a chemical extra touch. The Wolfberger Riesling Signature has it all too. The wine is very fresh and fruity, and its aroma primarily features citrus fruit, pineapple, and Granny Smith apple. There are also clearly some flowers and green herbs on the nose. This wine can easily age for 10 years or more. After 3 to 4 years, the aroma of what is called (in German): “ develops in this wine:"Firne”. Clearly more of a chemical smell with a hint of resin. This wine is an ideal pairing with local specialties such as Flammekuchen, and of course Sauerkraut. Not as a mash, but braised separately with a tasty slice of bacon and fresh sausage on the side. And let the Wolfberger Riesling Signature shine its crown!
Today, Wolfberger is one of the top producers in Alsace, with production entirely focused on quality. By training suppliers (winegrowers), conducting extensive research into viticulture, and taking the environment into account, Wolfberger ensures that its position at the top remains secure. Wolfberger is located a few kilometers from Colmar, in the village of Eguisheim. The village is very typical of the region, with its houses featuring dovecotes and pointed roofs. It is well worth a detour, and Wolfberger receives 100,000 visitors annually. This “number 1” of Alsatian wines counts no fewer than 800 cooperative members. You can imagine that Wolfberger wine offers not just one quality, but a wide spectrum.
Wolf…. Wolves were found in France in the Vosges Mountains until the 19th century. In the Wolfberger legend, the farmer trained the wolf to protect his vines from wild boars, which could have a disastrous effect on the vineyards. This winegrower was given the name Wolfberger, which roughly translates to “wolf shepherd.”
