Get to know this special grape variety from Puglia

Hey, what? Yes, you read that right: Susumaniello.
This blue grape is a native variety from Puglia, the sunny south of Italy. Not so long ago, this variety had almost completely disappeared. Fortunately, a few dedicated wineries have worked hard to preserve it.
Today, it grows Susumaniello weather – especially on the Salento peninsula – although it remains a fairly rare sight. Fortunately, several producers have since (re)discovered this grape, and rightly so. Discover the Zolla Susumaniello now! By the way, there is also A beautiful Rosé made by San Marzano!

    How does it taste?

The Zolla Susumaniello is located in terms of taste and texture somewhere between Primitivo en Negroamaro:
Less alcoholic and less overripe than Primitivo, but more fragrant and complex than Negroamaro.
The grapes are carefully destemmed and undergo controlled fermentation for 8 to 10 days. Afterwards, the wine first ages in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation on oak barrels.

What can you expect from the Zolla Susumaniello?

    • In the glass you see a deep ruby red color.
    • The bouquet offers aromas of plums, red fruit, en een vleugje pepper and dark chocolate.
    • No excessive sweetness from overripe fruit, but rather a distinct and balanced wine with a fine structure.
    • As mentioned: this wine sits between Primitivo and Negroamaro in terms of profile, and is therefore perfect with powerful, flavorful dishes.
    • Think of: barbecue, grilled sirloin, leg of lamb, stews or aged cheeses such as pecorino and parmesan.
