We have only a limited number of bottles of Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia 2012 available. Wines from Barolo are legendary. It is a top Italian wine from Piedmont that, when aged long enough, develops a fantastic aroma and flavor. This wine comes from one of the best areas in Barolo: Bussia. Fenocchio's wines can age for an extremely long time and only become truly interesting after at least 10 years. This wine is perfectly ready to drink now!
Give this wine half an hour after opening (do not decant!). With some oxygen, the full aroma and flavor profile develops well. Initially, the wine may still be a bit closed. The color is very light, somewhat Pinot Noir-like. On the nose, you detect a combination of dark fruit, blackberries, leather, and spices. Full and warm mouthfeel with plenty of dark fruit, plum, tobacco, and wood again. A very beautiful, complex, and persistent finish! The tannins have receded into the background in this wine. An elegant and complex Barolo that does not need to age for years! This is instant enjoyment.
The grapes for the Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia 2012 come from the Bussia cru in the commune of Monforte d’Alba in Barolo. The vineyards face southwest, at 300 meters above sea level. The soil consists of clay with abundant limestone sediment and iron. The vines are around 35 years old. The grapes ferment with a very long maceration of 40 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine then ages for 6 months in stainless steel and 30 months in large barrels (20-25 hl) of Slavonian oak. The 2012 vintage is considered an excellent year in Barolo. The weather and conditions during that year resulted in high-quality grapes with excellent ripeness and flavor.
Giacomo Fenocchio is one of the most famous classic Barolo wineries and is also one of the oldest. Today, Claudio Fenocchio (fifth generation) is at the helm, and he fully upholds the traditional style of the winery. There is no modern, light-footed wine here that is ready to drink quickly. This wine has needed time to develop! Anyone wishing to taste traditional Barolo of the highest level is well served by Fenocchio's wines. Fenocchio wines are made with unusually long maceration periods and age exclusively in large Slavonian oak barrels. Furthermore, Claudio intervenes as little as possible. His Barolos are very traditional in character, can be aged for a long time, and need time to reach their peak. For Fenocchio, quality begins in the vineyards. These are cultivated entirely organically (without certification).
Wine Enthusiast on Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia 2012: “Aromas of undergrowth, tobacco, sun-baked earth, and ripe black-skinned fruit lead the nose to this fantastic, firmly structured red wine. On the palate, notes of liquorice, graphite, and clove add depth to the core of ripe black cherry.” – 94/100
