The landscape of Castilla-La Mancha is vast. Very vast! Castilla-La Mancha is also known as Castilla la Nueva. Castilla-La Mancha is situated in the center of Spain on a high plateau. A high plateau with vast vineyards that produce a lot, yes, a whole lot, of Spanish wine. Life here is hard, and it is about survival. No partying! In the summer, Castilla-La Mancha experiences temperatures that can reach 45 degrees Celsius during the day. In the winter, it is cold here and often well below zero. Due to the “wind chill factor,” it feels much colder here then.
You see vineyards here stretching to the horizon. Vineyards that, as a small winegrower, you can only dream of. La Mancha is, after all, the largest wine-producing region in the world, with a total vineyard area of 191,699 hectares—a truly incredible figure that ensures a large proportion of all wine produced in Spain is made here. Consequently, almost all grapes are harvested mechanically here. The land is relatively cheap, so the rows can be planted further apart. This works positively for the wine grapes. A nice high yield. Lots of grapes. The quality is sometimes just "meh"... but they use virtually no pesticides here. Nor is it necessary due to the drought. No fungi and few diseases. Consequently, organic farming is largely practiced in this large wine region, although the organic label is often missing from the bottle for cost reasons. It is too expensive to obtain the certificate.
Castilla-La Mancha consists of 9 wine regions, and each region has its own style and type of wines. You simply have to taste and experience the differences. The DO wine regions are:Almansa, Jumilla, La Mancha, Manchuela, Méntrida, Mondjar, Ribera del Júcar and Valdepenas.
Since the beginning of this century, the planting in Castilla La Mancha has consisted mainly of white Airén. Until a few years ago, the most widely planted grape in the world! On the one hand, it supplies base wine for the brandy industry of Jerez, and on the other, white table wines. In terms of quality, pure Airén wines only became interesting in the 1990s, thanks to the introduction of modern winemaking equipment. The second grape on the plateau is Tempranillo, known locally as Cencibel.
Increased sales in the 1970s and 1980s allowed most cooperatives to exchange their traditional 'tinajas' (open, earthenware vats) for immaculate tiled floors and meticulously cleaned stainless steel equipment. Computer-controlled harvesting helped improve quality. Fast, refrigerated transport from vineyard to press, along with gentle pressing and controlled fermentation at low temperatures, have resulted in a new generation of white wines made from the Airén grape. Consequently, you see them more and more! The new methods ensure that refined fruity aromas are preserved and that secondary flavor impressions are suppressed. Some companies produce only young wines, while others age their red wines. We are also seeing a generation here that is increasingly moving towards natural wine.
