The red wine Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria from Feudi di San Marzano is full-bodied, rich, and complex. This magnum contains 1.5 liters of this amazing wine. As soon as you put your nose to the glass, you can smell it. An absolute top wine from Puglia, the heel of Italy. The aroma features plums, cherries, wild berries, tobacco, cocoa, and vanilla. The finish is full-bodied with a depth that never ends. An absolute winner! Delicious with a beef roulade or game stew, but also with pittige Chinese gerechten.
The Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is made from very old Primitivo vines. These produce grapes of very high quality! However, this does result in a somewhat lower yield: only 3,000 kg of grapes per hectare. For most wines, this is at least double, and cheap supermarket wines sometimes reach three times that amount. The grape juice used for the top wine ‘Sessantanni’ is rich in flavor and highly concentrated. It is well worth its price.
The 2015 vintage scores high marks with renowned wine critics. Luca Maroni – the Italian Harold Hamersma – gives the wine 99/100 points. And in the Gambero Rosso – Italy’s wine guide – this wine receives tre bichieri, 3 wine glasses, the highest score. On Vivino, too, this wine consistently scores above 4* (4.5*).
Primitivo di Manduria is an important DOC for red wine in the southern region of Puglia in Italy. In addition to the standard dry wines, there is even a sweet variant of the wine: Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale. Primitivo, the grape variety from which these wines are made, is very traditional in this part of Italy; Manduria is the spiritual home of Primitivo (even though the variety arrived there from Croatia). It is the only wine-growing region in Italy that specializes in the variety. California is also an important center for the grape in its form as Zinfandel. Primitivo got its name because it ripens early (the name has nothing to do with the variety or the wines being “primitive”). It shares this quality with the Spanish Tempranillo: temprano means “early” in Spanish.
