No, this is a serious top Rioja… This Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Rioja 2012 was even named “Best in Show” with 97 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2019, standing out as the only D.O.Ca Rioja wine to receive this award. No fewer than 16,500 wines participated in this competition.
And what a fantastic wine it is! The Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva Rioja has everything a class wine should possess. Everything is present in perfect balance. How easy winemaking seems, yet meanwhile… do not expect a heavy, unguided missile here, but rather a seductive, powerful, and refined Rioja with elegance and complexity. Totally in Balance. The color is ruby red with reddish-brown hues so characteristic of the wine, which have developed through long aging. The aroma is very aromatic and beautifully developed: toasted wood, coconut, complemented by tertiary scents such as leather and wet earth. The dried and candied fruit is delightfully present in the background. Its tannins are silky smooth and the finish is pleasantly long-lasting.
The term Gran Reserva is an official quality designation within the Rioja DOCa. This wine is made from a blend of tempranillo and graciano The grapes are required to age for at least 24 months in American and French oak barrels. Subsequently, they age for at least another 36 months in the bottle (but usually longer). As a result, a Gran Reserva does not reach the market until at least 5-6 years after the harvest. With an impressive winery and over 700 hectares of its own vineyards, El Coto de Rioja has grown into a leading winery in the region in a relatively short time.
