No dry Italian with drying tannins here. The Rocca della Macie Chianti Classico is, in fact, a lively ruby-red wine with expressive aromas of forest fruit, morello cherries, redcurrant, herbs, and violets. The oak aromas are beautifully interwoven into the taste, with a light touch of vanilla. The wine is characterful, juicy, and round. A wine that pairs beautifully with all kinds of meat dishes, pastas, and pizzas. Also delicious with a classic Tuscan ribollita soup.
The Rocca della Macie Chianti Classico was born alongside the winery. It has grown with it over the years and has become the ambassador that represents it all over the world. Nowadays, for example, there is also a small amount of Merlot in the wine for a bit more structure. It therefore deserves more space than can be given to it in this brief description. At least in your glass and the attention you give it!
The history of Rocca delle Macìe is in fact doubly intertwined with this Chianti Classico. Evolved both by the changes imposed upon it by regulatory updates and by the improvements made in the vineyards. Examples include replantings, soil analysis, and the clonal selection of Sangiovese. Nowadays there is also a little bit of Merlot in the wine for some more structure.
Rocca delle Macìe was founded by Italo Zingarelli, a colorful personality who had amassed his fortune as a boxer and producer of spaghetti westerns.
With that fortune, he decided to make his dreams come true, and so in 1973 he bought a fourteenth-century farmhouse in the heart of the Chianti region. He settled there with his family and planted his first vineyards.
