    Sparklingly fruity Spätburgunder

It’s not about technique, it’s all about knowledge! Those are the words of Johannes Geil, winemaker of this Spätburgunder. Well, we can certainly say that this man knows his stuff! The Weingut Geil Spätburgunder is, in any case, a striking example of this! A clear and light red color, so typical of German Pinot Noir (because that is what it is...). Pale red at the rim, with the typical combination on the nose of ripe red fruit like strawberries and raspberries in the classic PN combination with that damp, autumnal, and earthy forest floor scent. Open, rich in finesse, and seductive. Luscious and ripe fruit of red plums and raspberries with almost a hint of sweetness. Licorice, honey, and also something nutty. Complex finish. Soft and unctuous tannins. Easy to drink, even without a meal. The Weingut Geil Spätburgunder is absolutely a beautiful glass.

Winemaker Johannes Geil of the Geil family wine estate in Bechtheim knows very well where he wants to go with his wines: Exciting, perfectly balanced and impressive. Modest as he is, he is sometimes amazed at what is happening, while his wines are praised by the international press and the Gault Millau guide even declared him discovery of the year! He has been working on a wide range of wines at the family winery since he was 16, including this Spätburgunder.

    Maxime Herkunft

Together with 70 other companies, Weingut Geil joined the Maxime Ursprung Rheinhessen cooperative group in 2017. In early 2017, seventy wineries, including members of the VDP Rheinhessen, united to “Maxime Herkunft Rheinhessen" to form, which means “belief in the origins of Rheinhessen”. The most important unit is the voluntary but consistent application of our three-level classification system. These three levels are Gutsweine (Estate Wine), Ortsweine (Village Wine), and Lagenweine (Single-Vineyard Wine). It is believed that this system not only sharpens the profile of Rheinhessen, but also presents the wine in a tangible and recognizable way.
