Terre di Chieti

Terre di Chieti is an IGP wine region in Abruzzo, located on the west coast of central Italy. Pecorino is an indigenous grape variety from Abruzzo. It belongs to the category of ‘nearly extinct grapes’, but fortunately it was saved and is widely planted! It releases delicious aromas that greet you immediately upon opening the bottle.

Terre di Chieti IGT is an Indicazione Geografica Tipica / Protetta title for the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, Central Italy. It was established in 1995, when the IGT category was rolled out across Italy for the first time.

The production regulations for all IGT/IGP titles are flexible compared to DOCs and DOCGs. Terre di Chieti wines can (in theory) be anything from dry whites and sweet rosés to sparkling red wines. However, most are dry table wines made from only a handful of classic grape varieties. Some of these were already established in the region, while others are commercial imports from other wine regions.

Red wines are primarily based on Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Merlot. This emphasis is not surprising. Montepulciano is by far the most planted grape variety in the Abruzzo. Sangiovese is a reliable and classic Italian red wine grape that thrives in the local terroir. Merlot is a crowd-pleaser and a useful blending component.

In a similar scenario, Chardonnay, Pecorino, and Pinot Grigio make up the majority of the white wines. The former is perhaps the most marketable wine grape in the world and grows well here, making it an obvious option.

Pecorino grape

Pecorino is a core white grape variety throughout Abruzzo, and Marche just to the north. It has become a main component of the local IGTs, particularly of the Colline Teatine and the Colline Pescaresi that surround Pescara. The planting of Pinot Grigio has increased enormously in many parts of Italy since 2000, not only in the northeastern interior.

Moreover, the IGT regulations permit the production of single-varietal wines from a relatively wide range of other grapes. These include local classics such as Passerina, Cococciola, Bombino Bianco, and Falanghina, as well as the globally popular Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc.
