Abruzzo, situated on the Adriatic coast in Central Italy, is a wine region that continues to surprise more and more enthusiasts. Wines are produced here that perfectly reflect the character of the rugged landscape and the Mediterranean climate. Known for its accessible yet complex red and white wines, Abruzzo is a region that no wine lover should miss.
Abruzzo is characterized by a breathtaking contrast between mountains and sea. The Apennines, with the Gran Sasso as their highest point, ensure cool nights and freshness in the grapes, while the warm Adriatic wind promotes perfect ripening. The soils are rich in limestone and clay, which gives the wines their characteristic minerality and structure. Thanks to the combination of altitude, hours of sunshine, and temperature fluctuations, the grapes develop an excellent balance between acidity and sugars, resulting in lively and expressive wines. You will also find the famous region here. Terre di Chieti.
Abruzzo is one of the most productive wine regions in Italy and is best known for its red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and the fresh, aromatic Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. (try the Organic Lunaria Charisma) In addition to these classics, you will also find the increasingly popular Pecorino, a white wine with a fresh and spicy note. Winemakers in this region combine traditional methods with modern techniques to produce wines that are both authentic and accessible.
The Montepulciano grape is the star of Abruzzo and is known for its deep color, rich fruitiness, and soft tannins. This grape produces robust red wines that often undergo several years of aging in wooden barrels to develop extra complexity. For the white wines, alongside Trebbiano and Pecorino (the Vanita Pecorino is a budget-friendly Pecorino), the Passerina grape is also used, a lesser-known but very aromatic variety. Some producers experiment with amphora aging and long skin maceration for extra depth and texture in their wines.
