Bardos Altura Ribera del Duero is a powerful yet remarkably fresh red wine from Ribera del Duero. Deep and intense purple in color. On the nose, highly aromatic with plum and blackcurrant, complemented by leather, tobacco, wood, and vanilla. On the palate, full and firm, with clearly present tannins that are already beginning to soften beautifully due to the oak aging. Powerful structure and a smooth finish.
This wine comes from high-altitude vineyards between Alcubilla and Villálvaro in the province of Soria, close to the source regions of the Duero. The vines are situated at high altitude in a cool and rugged microclimate, on sandy soils with fine gravel and iron-rich clay. It is precisely this combination that gives the wine its tension, fresh structure, and distinct terroir signature. The blend consists primarily of Tinta Fina with small amounts of Albillo Mayor and Garnacha Tinta.
The vineyards are old and yield low returns, resulting in extra concentration and depth. The grapes are harvested by hand at night, typically from late September to mid-October. This is followed by fermentation in 15,000-kilogram vats at approximately 18°C, with gentle maceration of about two weeks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel. Subsequently, the wine ages for 12 months in oak barrels and larger wooden containers, ranging from classic 225-liter barriques to 600-liter bocoyes and larger vats. As a result, Bardos Altura gains not only power but also detail, suppleness, and refinement.
In the glass, Bardos Altura Ribera del Duero displays a vibrant cherry-red color with purple hues. On the nose, the combination of ripe fruit and subtle spices is immediately noticeable. Think of dark red and black fruit, complemented by a spicy undertone and a hint of oak influence. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied but not heavy. On the contrary: the tannins are ripe and velvety, while the acidity provides freshness and balance. As a result, the wine remains lively right through to the finish, where the fruit returns beautifully.
Many Ribera del Duero wines rely heavily on power and ripe dark fruit. Bardos Altura adds something extra: altitude, freshness, and a more tense style. This makes the wine interesting for enthusiasts who seek body but also desire elegance. The combination of high-altitude vineyards, old vines, and careful aging gives the wine a distinct signature within Ribera del Duero.
Thanks to its combination of fruit, structure, and freshness, Bardos Altura Ribera del Duero is versatile at the table. This wine pairs particularly well with:
If you are looking for a Ribera del Duero with depth, ripe fruit, and oak influence, but without excessive heaviness, then Bardos Altura Ribera del Duero is a strong choice. This wine combines classic Spanish power with striking freshness. As a result, it works equally well with a meat dinner and with a fine bottle for lovers of serious yet accessible Spanish red wine.
