Wines from the Rioja region are usually known and famous for their use of oak. Just think of soft Reservas and Gran Reservas. Their white Tres Viñas, for example, is delightfully oak-driven, yet it is definitely a wine that requires food. Fortunately, for a casual drink or with lighter dishes, there is also their crisp white Baron de Ley Rioja Blanco. Light yellow with a green shimmer, it is full of ripe citrus fruit and apricot with good intensity. Additionally, the Baron de Ley Rioja Blanco features herbs, with dill and coriander being clearly discernible. Refreshing and bright with a beautiful balance between creaminess and acidity. Delicious with a Caesar salad, for example, or simply with an old-fashioned shrimp cocktail. And oh yes, how could we forget… tapas, of course! All “Muy bien.” And also not unimportant… excellent value for money!
The Viura grape used for the Barón de Ley Blanco comes from 65-year-old vines from a special plot in the Najerilla Valley in Rioja Alta. This grape is precisely responsible for the creaminess in the wine. The Garnacha comes from Finca Los Almendros near the Barón de Ley headquarters in Rioja Oriental, and the Tempranillo Blanco, a spontaneous mutation of the red Tempranillo, grows at Finca Carbonera.
Barón de Ley is one of those Rioja wineries whose first wines were born with a true calling for the future. There has probably never been a winery in the La Rioja area of the Navarra region that has been as controversial as Barón de Ley, where the modern character of its wines really shook things up. Barón de Ley, a winery with a château philosophy, with its own vineyards and limited production, based on the concept of making single-vineyard wines: modern, Bordeaux-style, but with Rioja class.
