A top Italian wine in a large 1.5-liter bottle

Sometimes you come across top-quality wines in Italy with a low classification. The Cà dei Frati Ronchedone Vino Rosso magnum is one such example. A wine with only the ‘Vino Rosso’ classification, simply because the DOC Lugana does not produce red wines. Proof that it is not the region, but the producer that matters. This winery’s vineyards are located in the best parts of Lugana in Lombardy.

Cà dei Frati Ronchedone Vino Rosso magnum, quality without a quality label

In the glass, the wine has an astonishingly dark, intense color: deep purple with a shade of blue. On the nose, the wine is generous and intense with plenty of cherries, blueberries, and cassis. You can also clearly detect some cedar from the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Plenty of flavor from crisp black fruit such as amarena cherry and some undergrowth. A refined, almost Languedoc-style wine, but with a beautiful Italian guise. We also find it bears a slight resemblance to the much more expensive Amarones from Valpolicella. A wonderfully sultry, intense wine with pleasant acidity and a beautiful balance. Concentrated yet supple due to soft and moderately present tannins. A long finish due to high flavor intensity. Clear oak influence on the nose as the wine has matured in French oak.

    Azienda Agricola Cá Dei Frati
Ca’ dei Frati can be traced back to the year 1782, where a document refers to a house with a wine cellar on the land of Sermion, with the name ‘house of the brothers’ (dei Frati).

They own 20 hectares of vineyards with a wide variety of different terroirs. The subsoil consists largely of loam with a high content of lime and mineral salts. Due to the presence of abundant gravel, the soil has good drainage. This ensures that the grapes can ripen optimally. Also of great importance is the Pelér wind, which blows across Lake Garda. It causes large temperature fluctuations in a short time that benefit the aromas in the wine. Lake Garda, in turn, also acts as a regulator against excessive differences between the seasons. In short, a spot with a delightful (almost) Mediterranean microclimate.
