The Barolo that always does what it's supposed to do: simply be delicious at a great price!

Ethereal and precious, here is the Barolo D.O.C.G., a noble wine now appreciated all over the world for its unique character and its close ties to the eleven municipalities where its production is permitted. Mention the name Barolo and wine connoisseurs immediately start to salivate. Notes of ripe red fruit and liquorice resonate in the glass like an orchestral symphony, enveloping and warm, soft and elegant. But is that really the case…? We know other stories, too. “Phew, what a harsh wine. What is that light color? Astringent. Astringent on the teeth, and well… does it have to cost so much? No, Barolo is not a wine you just hop into… that requires a few years of preparation and understanding that you really don’t just open that wine for an aperitif. No, this simply has to be paired with food. The exquisite Cascina Ghercina Barolo is also a true food wine. Intense and powerful, although the color might suggest otherwise. Fortunately, we managed to get our hands on a few cases of the Cascina Ghercina Barolo from the beautiful 2016 vintage. Already a bit aged, but certainly still good for the next 10 years. Advanced wine drinkers will derive great pleasure from this. Patience is rewarded here!”

Winter stews, but also, of course, pasta with white truffle… a richly filled risotto with bacon and fennel sausage… These are the ideal partners on the table to intensely enjoy together with this Barolo. Cedarwood, tobacco, cherry, dark chocolate, dried flowers, and a hint of burnt notes on the nose. Spicy opening, again lightly caramelized cherry; powerful, mouth-filling, young yet grainy tannins, long finish, very long aftertaste. A wine that will last for years and must be kept for true connoisseurs!

    Cascina Ghercina

And Cascina Ghercina is a truly top-tier house; all their wines offer excellent value for money. The estate is situated in the heart of the Langhe, by the tiny Lake Ghercina, which nevertheless provides sufficient cooling for the small vineyard. Cascina Ghercina was acquired by brothers Paolo and Guido Sartirano in 2002. They are part of the Sartirano family, which has been successfully producing wine since 1871 and owns various estates in Italy. With this acquisition, the house has taken a huge step forward with an impressive portfolio.

Barolo wines are made from the Nebbiolo grape. It is sometimes said that the name comes from Nebbia, which means mist in Italian. The grape also has a sort of dull white top layer. At the same time, the thick skin ensures that the grape does not burst when exposed to excessive moisture. And that is very important, since the grape is always harvested as one of the last in the season during the mist period! In any case, the Nebbiolo grape produces full-bodied wines with that typical aroma of perfumed flowers and the unorthodox combination of wood, leather, asphalt, and earth. A rollercoaster for your sense of smell and taste. If you pair it with food, make sure to choose dishes that can handle this wine, such as meat, pasta with heavy sauces, or a rich risotto. Otherwise, it is a waste of both the wine and the food. This Cascina Ghercina Barolo is on every wine lover's wish list and is simply a fantastic bottle of wine that never disappoints.
