The Lagrein Riserva from Castel Firmian is deep red in color, and the aroma is dominated by ripe berry fruit and jam. It feels like a fruit bomb! You can taste a hint of vanilla derived from the oak aging. The wine is exceptionally well-crafted: structured and delicate at the same time. Soft tannins and well-balanced by the fine acidity.
It concerns the same region, but the names Süd-Tirol and Trentino Alto-Adige are used interchangeably. And not without reason. The cause dates back to shortly after the First World War, when Austrian Tyrol was cut into two parts. The southern part became Italian without the inhabitants having any influence on the matter. Mussolini gave the residents the impossible choice between giving up their homeland or their identity. This led to much discontent among the residents and even to bomb attacks!
Although the identity conflict was formally settled in 1995 (more than 75 years later!), you can still see the dissatisfaction in this area that the residents of this region do not feel Italian. The houses have an Austrian architectural style, and on the balconies stand geraniums instead of clotheslines with dried laundry. During our visits to local wineries, we still saw banners with the German text ‘Süd-Tirol is nicht Italien’.
The wine grapes planted here therefore have an Austrian feel to them: Gewurztraminer, Weissburgunder, Sylvaner and, for example, Vernatch. These grapes are widely grown in this area and good wine is made from them. The pride of the region, however, is the Lagrein grape. While this wine was formerly used as an ingredient for an unremarkable rosé called Kretzer, nowadays this grape performs very well as a single-varietal red wine. The taste is somewhat earthy with notes of plums, cherries, and sometimes some soft chocolate. With a short aging period in barriques, Lagrein wines gain more body and can be aged longer.
This Castel Firmian Lagrein Riserva wine pairs very well with richer, spicy starters. It makes dishes with thick sauces, lasagna, game, and grilled meat even tastier. Or prepare a (fatty) juicy sausage on the barbecue. Fantastic!
