    The comeback of Teroldego Rotaliano

Teroldego Rotaliano is a red grape originating from the northern Trentino wine region. Castel Firmian has produced a velvety, smooth wine from this Teroldego Rotaliano. Ruby red in color with some purple hues. It is a pure wine with a pure taste, featuring an intense aroma of wild berries, especially blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. There are also hints of sweet spices and bay leaf. On the palate, the wine is deliciously juicy with silky tannins. The taste is reminiscent of Syrah, and it appears that these grapes are also genetically closely related. You can confidently serve rich dishes with this wine: roasted and grilled meats, pasta bolognese, spicy cheeses, or pasta with a rich meat sauce. It is also an ideal wine to enjoy a glass of after dinner.

Until the early 1980s, the grape led Teroldego Rotaliano a relatively unknown and undervalued existence. In the 1980s, winemaker Elisabetta Foradori took the lead in showing the world what Teroldego was capable of. She applied mass selection techniques when replanting her vineyards, which helped preserve and promote the genetic diversity of Teroldego—something that had been lost due to large-scale vineyards in Teroldego that primarily produced bulk wines. She also emphasized the need for lower yields and biodynamic farming. She even used clay amphorae to age her wines. And her mission succeeded. Since then, Teroldego Rotaliano has begun a true comeback and now enjoys much greater recognition and appreciation.

    Mezzacorona

Castel Firmian is part of the larger Mezzacorona. Mezzacorona is the market leader in the Northern Italian region of Trentino (Alto Adige). This wine cooperative has existed since 1904 and is one of the very first cooperatives in Italy. Today, the name MezzaCorona represents a group of wine companies stretching from the far north to the deep south of Italy. MezzaCorona controls approximately 2,400 hectares of vineyards there and in the adjacent Alto Adige. Characteristic of the region is a considerably varied planting, with the most famous grape being the immensely popular Pinot Grigio. Naturally, the MezzaCorona range includes a number of different styles of Pinot Grigio, and in terms of reds, it primarily consists of special regional specialties such as Lagrein and Teroldego Rotaliano.
