An ultimate Barolo for at least 20 years of drinking pleasure.

The Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2016 displays depth and a profound character. This is the DNA of the Cannubi cru, perhaps the most celebrated in the appellation, with mildly compact, well-drained sandy soils (actually a mix of 45% sand, 35% silt, and 20% clay, to be precise). These conditions contribute to the dark concentration and firm textural support found here. These assets are particularly evident in this classic vintage. Dark fruit and dried cherries transition into earthy truffle and licorice. Of these various single-vineyard expressions, the tight tannins on this Cannubi certainly suggest a very long drinking window. This wine receives a whopping 97 points from Monica Larner of The Wine Advocate.

This vintage of 40,000 bottles distinguishes itself through its pure excellence. The Damilano Barolo Cannubi 2016 possesses a distinct elegance and is particularly suitable for aging. After 5 to 10 years, the complex and mature bouquet will open in all its glory and enchant you with its complexity. Power and refinement in one. Unique in its class and embodies everything the name Barolo stands for. We have already aged it for you in our cellars for about 6 years. It is already starting to come into its own beautifully! A real bargain! This is a wine for grand dinners with true connoisseurs! Piedmontese cuisine lends itself perfectly to this, for example with its brasato al barolo!

    Grand Cru from Piedmont

If there were a “Grand Cru” classification in the Barolo region, just like in Burgundy, the Cannubi vineyard would certainly be one. It is the most famous and well-known vineyard, already mentioned with accolades in the 17th century. The oldest surviving bottle of Cannubi dates back to 1752. The name Cannubi is therefore older in history than Barolo. The quality of the vineyard and its grapes is primarily due to the composition of the soil. The very high percentage of sand, as well as the potassium and magnesium elements present in the soil composition, ensures a more complex aromatic profile in the wine. Above all, a beautiful elegance. These natural characteristics therefore give the Azienda Agricola Damilano Barolo Cannubi its exclusive quality.

Why 2016 is a perfect year for terroir expression of the crus according to the makers!

This vintage reveals the true character of the terroir, as the weather conditions were very classic for the perfect growth of Nebbiolo: not too hot, not too dry, not too cold, not too wet. – Alfio Cavallotto van Cavallotto

2016 is an exceptional vintage, with great purity of the grape variety. Late harvests give more character and complexity to the wine. – Paolo Manzone

The expression of cru terroirs is often less clear in hot years. The distinct expressions of the different villages and vineyards are told in a magnificent way with the 2016 Barolos. – Walter Anselma van Schiavenza

The progression of the seasons resulted in slower development in the vineyards than in recent, warmer vintages. As a result, all the distinctive elements are now coming to the fore. – Giacomo Conterno van Aldo Conterno

2016 is a beautiful vintage, rather classic with crisp and direct wines. – Roberto Conterno van Giacomo Conterno

    Damilano Winery

The Damilano family winery belongs to the absolute top in the Barolo wine region. The current winery dates back to 1935, but their vineyards on the Cannubi hill (the most prestigious wine hill within the Barolo commune) go back to 1752.

The history of this historic family winery began in 1890 when Giuseppe Borgogno, the great-grandfather of the current owners, began vinifying the grapes from his vineyards himself. Before that, they were always sold on.
Together with his son-in-law, Giacomo Damilano, he tended the vineyards and the vinification of the wines. This formed the foundation of Damilano and the excellent quality of their Italian wines.
