The Escudero Valdelagunde Cuvée Especial Verdejo is produced by the modernly equipped Bodegas Pedro Escudero, located in the heart of the DO Rueda, in the town of La Seca. After several generations of always selling their grapes to third parties, the Escudero family finally decided to start their own business. The Verdejo grapes themselves come from just outside the Rueda region, but demonstrate that it can also be of high quality beyond the popular Rueda borders. That is immediately clear. First, light golden yellow, sparkling and tearing deliciously against our glass. When we put our nose in the glass, it instantly feels like spring! Nicely fresh garden herbs, wild fennel, lime zest, star fruit, and green apple. On the palate, juicy and elegant with white peach, nectarine, and Golden Delicious apple, but at the same time with impressions primarily of bergamot citrus and passion fruit.
Serve around 7 to 8°C. A wonderfully crisp, vibrant glass with a touch of creaminess. As an aperitif, of course, but we really go all out with grilled prawns, various antipasti, and courgette spaghetti. A piece of grilled sustainable (!!) tuna, wow! We’re definitely going for that with this Escudero Valdelagunde Cuvée Especial Verdejo!
Bodegas Pedro Escudero has risen to become one of the big players from the Rueda region in less than 20 years. With modern labels that are representative of the new style of the wines. The wines cater to the market trend towards digestible and pleasant-drinking wines with just that little bit of extra quality. No easy supermarket rubbish here, but precisely that little bit extra!
The company has since been handed over to the third generation of winemakers, consisting of Pablo, Diego, and Maria, of whom Pablo is the creator of the now iconic Valdelagunde wines such as this one. Escudero Valdelagunde Cuvee Especial Verdejo. The family business has grown to nearly 110 hectares. To survive in today's cutthroat wine world, you have to be distinctive and unique. Pedro Escudero has succeeded in doing just that with the Escudero Valdelagunde Cuvee Especial Verdejo. “There is no wine that gives as much drinking pleasure as this 100% Verdejo,” says Diego. Thanks to cooled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the freshness in this wine is preserved, which then undergoes subtle aging in both French and American oak. Typical of Escudero’s identity. Bring it on, Pedro!
