The Verdejo grape originates in the Rueda region of Spain, northwest of Madrid, where it has been cultivated since the 11th century. It accounts for a large part of the Spanish Wine. This region in Castilla y León offers the perfect terroir for this grape, with its sandy and calcareous soils and a climate that combines cold winters and hot summers. Verdejo is particularly well-suited for producing fresh, aromatic white wines that retain their lively character. Verdejo wines often exhibit similar characteristics to Sauvignon Blanc, such as citrus and fruit notes, but also offer subtler spicy and floral nuances, making them unique in their profile.
Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc They are both fresh, aromatic white wines, but they differ in taste profile and origin. Verdejo, originating from the Rueda region in Spain, often has a more subtle spicy and floral character with notes of citrus, green apple, and sometimes a hint of fennel. Sauvignon Blanc, popular worldwide, especially in regions such as France and New Zealand, is known for its pronounced aromas of gooseberries, citrus, and sometimes grassy nuances. While Sauvignon Blanc often has more powerful acidity, Verdejo offers a slightly rounder, softer finish with refined spiciness.
