    Imperial Rioja

Finca La Emperatriz – The Empress’s Estate – is a historic vineyard in Baños de Rioja. It belonged to the last Empress of France, Eugenia de Montijo. And their Finca La Emperatriz El Jardín de La Emperatriz is, therefore, an imperial glass! What a stunningly beautiful and deep ruby red color. Good intensity on the nose with pronounced aromas. Fragrant nose of lavender, mulberries, blueberries, bay leaves, nutmeg, and coconut on a slightly earthy background. It is a medium-bodied, juicy red that combines sweet fruit and freshness with rich spicy notes that tantalize the palate. The firm tannins provide a powerful presence with pleasant toasted hints in the finish. The wine received 91 points from Robert Parker as well as James Suckling. The Finca La Emperatriz El Jardín de La Emperatriz is naturally a great partner with pork. bell pepper dishes, roasted lamb and, of course, all kinds of tapas.

Impressive terroir at 570 m above sea level on one of the highest plateaus in Rioja Alta. Furthermore, there is a layer of large white pebbles to a depth of approximately 40 cm, covering a loose, sandy subsoil. An ideal soil for growing vines. Excellent drainage, plenty of light, and the roots are well positioned to receive all the nutrients they need. As a result, the wines made from this type of soil are fine and elegant.

    Finca La Emperatriz

Finca La Emperatriz is the original name of a unique estate in Baños de Rioja, now owned by the Hernáiz family.
The name comes from the original owner, the former Empress of France, Eugenia de Montijo. This Spanish noblewoman was the wife of Napoleon III (himself the originator of the “Cru” system in Bordeaux), and was already producing high-quality wines in the second half of the 19th century; in the meantime, she won a medal for them at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
The Hernáiz family purchased the entire estate in 1996 and immediately embarked on their first project to produce top-quality wines. Located 12 km from Haro, nestled between the Sierra de Cantabria and Sierra de la Demanda mountain ranges, Finca La Emperatriz lies at the northwestern end of the Rioja DOC. Consequently, there is a constant flurry of change at the old Bodegas La Emperatriz: a new fermentation cellar, new wines, and extended aging in concrete and in the bottle before the wines are released to the market. The Hernáiz family bought the property in 1996 and has not stopped since. All in all, they produce 350,000 bottles per vintage.
