The Fontanassa Gavi Rovereto is made of 100% Cortese grapes that, in turn, were harvested nice and late. As a result, it bears some resemblance to a Premier Cru Chablis from France. Roundness, but here too, a mineral tightness due to the limestone in the soil. In the glass, the Fontanassa displays a beautiful straw-yellow color. Some greens also sparkle through it. On the nose, hints of freshly cut grass, melon, pear, and almond. After bottling, this harmonious Gavi already displays a remarkable complexity and a pleasant richness of flavors with a fine mineral undertone. The soft, round mouthfeel and ripe flavors are in brilliant balance with the fresh acidity. The finish is long, full, and elegant, confirming the outstanding quality of this winemaker's Fontanassa.
The grapes are harvested by hand in September. Spontaneous fermentation and aging sur lie in stainless steel tanks (with a minimum of sulfites) do the rest. A low-intervention wine and pure nature. Delicious as an aperitif. Also pairs well with langoustines or salmon trout en papillote with very thinly sliced fennel, for example.
The winery Fontanassa is located in Rovereto di Gavi in the heart of the historic Gavi D.O.C.G. area of the municipality of Gavi. The first harvests were vinified in 1988 with the arrival of Marco and Roberto Gemme at the company and thanks to the collaboration of winemaker Gaspare Buscemi. The Fontanassa firm has a cultivated area of 42 hectares, 27 of which are vineyards. The vineyards are grown on clay soil with stones and sandy soil.
Between Piedmont and Liguria lies a land of extraordinary beauty where time seems to move slower, amidst pristine forests and manicured vineyards, paths climbing the hills of peace and silence. This is where Gavi comes from. A wine with a strong and unique personality. A magnificent white wine that holds its own well in a region with magnificent red wines. And that is why they started the Golden Gavi organization in 2010. There are nine excellent companies that decided to invest time and energy in raising awareness of the local culture, and rightly so… The white wines of Gavi are truly worth that extra attention.
