Rare to find…. and rarely have I had the privilege of tasting such a beautiful, iconic Barolo

The Gaja Barolo Sperss is characterized by the typical nature of the Serralunga terroir, with an intense structure and beautiful, smooth tannins. The aroma is full of dark, ripe fruit such as plums and black cherries, with hints of tar, licorice, and truffles. Earthy! The vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba produced much less fruit than average and suffered from downy mildew during this season due to high humidity at the end. However, Serralunga d’Alba fruit is harvested extra late, and that extra time was important to meet the grape ripeness targets. The wine presents depth and complexity. That said, the bouquet is truly spectacular. The Sperss Barolo is expressive and delightful; it shows its muscle, but also its exceptional finesse. The Gaja Barolo Sperss has a shelf life of approximately 2045… so it won't be finished right away with your tartare tonight. The wine requires hearty dishes like Beef Wellington, and, naturally, a classic pairing with Tagliatelle tartufata!

From 1996 until the 2013 vintage, Sperss was marketed as Langhe. Nebbiolo. 5% Barbera was added to the blend, meaning it could not be marketed as a Barolo. However, Angelo Gaja's daughters decided to make this single vineyard from 100% Nebbiolo grapes again. As of the 2013 vintage, Sperss is therefore a Barolo once more.

    What is Sperss?

The vineyard named Sperss is located in the Marenca-Rivette sub-area of the municipality of Serralunga and is laid out like an amphitheater, with a total area of 12 hectares, consisting of very compact clay-limestone marl-like marl types. Situated with a southern and south-western exposure at an average altitude of 370 meters, the vineyard was planted in the mid-1960s.
Until 1961, the Gaja family purchased grapes in the Langhe region for their Barolo wines. In 1961, they bought 10 hectares of vineyard in one of the best areas in the Serralunga region. They named it Sperss, which refers to the powerful wines from Serralunga.
