The Braida winery, founded by Giuseppe Bologna, is located in the Monferrato area, in the Piedmont region. From 1961 to the present day, it has been the leading wine producer for Barbera d’Asti. It is currently run by Raffaella and Joseph Bologna, his children, both qualified oenologists. The Braida Barbera d’Asti Bricco dell’Uccellone is a layered and perfect expression of the Barbera grape. This wine has benefited from a few extra years of bottle aging to allow the flavors to blend well. The bouquet on the nose reveals dark fruit, seamlessly transitioning into menthol, herbs, bay leaf, spices, vanilla, and licorice. Firm on the palate, it offers a full structure and long-lasting, persistent black fruit. The wine fits like a glove!
However, its main asset is the bright and fresh acidity that so characterizes the Barbera grape. That freshness breaks down the structure of the wine and the black fruit, allowing it to fully unleash its potential. Ideal to pair with a creamy or buttery dish, such as risotto with bacon and radicchio or a piece of oven-roasted pork belly. The wine can handle a bit of richness!
The vineyards of this top Barbera are located in Rocchetta Tanaro, in the Monferrato region, situated at an altitude of 160 meters. The vineyard soil is sandy with clay. During the grape harvest, strict selection is carried out to select only the very best quality grapes. After the harvest, the grapes for the Barbera d’Asti Bricco dell’Uccellone are gently pressed and undergo fermentation with the skins for 20 days in large steel tanks, all at a controlled temperature. Subsequently, the wine ages for 15 months in 225-liter oak barrels. After bottling, the wine ages in the bottle for 12 months before being released onto the market.
Sourced from a single vineyard on a steep hill in Rocchetta Tanaro in the DOC Barbera d’Asti. A woman used to live here on the hill whose nose (yes, nose...) closely resembled a bird's beak and who, moreover, was always dressed entirely in black. That is how she earned her nickname L’Uccellone (the big bird), to which this wine still refers. Fortunately, the wine itself offers more conviviality.
