Citrus (lime), pear, apple, orange, honey, and brioche. This Lieubeau Confluent Muscadet (not to be confused with Muscat!) is refreshing, crisp, and organic, to boot! Made from the Melon de Bourgogne-grape, this wine comes from the Muscadet region in the Loire, France. This region covers the final stretch of the Loire River, where these vines stand. No wonder it possesses such beautiful minerality. The wine is clear, light golden-yellow in color and incredibly pure. Great for lovers of wines with distinct minerality and a saline undertone. The long aging ‘sur lie’ (on the lees) ensures a beautiful structure, complexity, and a long finish.
The Lieubeau Confluent Muscadet has a fresh and lively flavour profile. On the palate, you taste a perfect balance between dry, invigorating acidity and the briny notes typical of Muscadet wines. The minerality is prominent, making the wine complex and providing a long finish. This wine is delicious with grilled sardines or other fish dishes, and also pairs well with shellfish. Mussels are a classic pairing with Muscadet! In Brittany, it is on almost every menu.
The Lieubeau Confluent Muscadet comes from the winery. Famille Lieubeau, located in the Muscadet region of the Loire. The winemaker is Francois Lieubeau.
The L’Aulnaye vineyard, where the grapes for this wine are grown, is situated on an east-facing slope with a subsoil of schist and gneiss. The vines are between 20 and 40 years old, which contributes to the depth of the wine. A vinification process using low-temperature fermentation preserves the wine's freshness. The six to nine months of aging ‘sur lie’ and the bâtonnage technique provide additional complexity and roundness. The Lieubeau Confluent Muscadet is a beautiful reflection of the Loire terroir and the quality that the Lieubeau winery strives for.
Perswijn on the 2020 vintage Open, melon, apricots, ripe. Powerful and juicy, a touch of bitterness, full, ripe.
Wine Enthusiast on the 2021 vintage – 90 points “Named after the meeting point of the Sèvre Nantaise and Maine rivers, this wine has fresh acidity combined with a creamy texture. The fruit comes from selected parcels, with apple and citrus flavors in balance.”
Jancis Robinson, on the 2021 vintage – 16/20 “Tasted blind. Certified AB organic. 20-year-old vines on shallow soils, gneiss hillside. Pneumatic pressing with juice selection. Spontaneous fermentation. Aged 9–12 months on lees in underground vats with regular stirring. I smell lemon-lime wine gums and firelighters. Crisp. Boxy, glassy structure. Precise. Very neat. Acidity is taking a scalpel, ruler and spirit level to the fruit, slicing it into shape. Whetstone. Very appetising. (TC)”
Decanter on the 2019 vintage – 90 points “The close-knit Lieubeau family are based in Château-Thebaud. The 70-hectare domaine is now run by François (commercial side), Vincent (vines and wine-making) and Marie (accounts and wine tourism) taking over from their parents Chantal and Pierre. The Lieubeaus produce an excellent range of Muscadets along with some IGP varietal wines. Confluent comes from an east facing parcel of 20 year old vines on gneiss near the confluence of the appellations two rivers – the Sèvre and the Maine. The still young and slightly saline 2019 has mouthfilling texture with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Like many of the Lieubeau’s wines this has a good potential to age. Good with grilled fish. Drinking Window 2021 – 2028”
