The Luretta Gutturnio Superiore is a red wine from the Emilia Romagna region. The winemaker, Lucio Salamini, bought a number of vineyards on the hills of the Luretta River with his family in 1993. The ambition was to produce the best wines in Italy. A tall order when you have no experience in winemaking.
In 2016, we drank a wine from Luretta for the first time and were immediately sold. This is delicious! There are certainly better (and more expensive) wines to be found, but here, for a good price, you really have something special in your glass. And that applies to all Luretta wines. The wines are far from average, but that is precisely what makes them so special. Each wine has a distinct character of its own.
‘The secret of Luretta is to allow the typicality of the soil and that of the grape varieties to be expressed in the wine.’ At Luretta, they ensure that the vines root deeply to make optimal use of the nutrients in the soil.
The blend of Barbera and Bonarda grapes makes this wine a magnificent celebration. The grapes go together in the ‘Gutturnio’: harvested simultaneously and fermented together. The wine is powerful and boisterous. As soon as the cork is removed, the wine leaps with joy. Give it an hour to let off steam, and it will reveal its full potential.
The color is deep red and intense, the aroma is round and rich, with red (cherries) and black fruit (blackberry); you can also smell that the wine has undergone 9 months of wood aging: a hint of licorice and spices. The mineral and earthy notes of the terroir give the wine its unique character. The taste is full and ripe, yet fresh and juicy. The ripe fruit is fully integrated with the soft tannins. A beautiful balance between acidity, minerality, and soft tannins.
The Luretta Gutturnio has an intense flavor. Perfect with a firm salami or, for example, a nice steak.
