The Monviert Martagona Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso wine. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso…. What a name for a grape! There is a good chance you have never heard of it. The Refosco with the red leg is world-famous in Fruili, the region north of Venice. It is a grape that has been cultivated in the region since the 1700s and is very popular. Tasty, fresh, and easy to drink. A beautiful name for a beautiful wine. The Monviert Martagona Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is indeed made from a very local grape variety, entirely native to this region. Also just a tad different, a wine with a nice little rough edge that makes it delightfully exciting.
Until recently, the grape was also unknown to us. But after the first sip, we were immediately enthusiastic. We work extensively with Montviert wines and our customers have spoken very highly of them for years, so we also proceeded to purchase the Refosco.
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is dark red in color with a purple tinge. A soft bouquet of cherry jam with a hint of spices and resin. Hmm, resin—that gives it just that kick… A powerful flavor provides a delightful contrast to the invigorating fruity freshness, while the soft tannins beautifully round off the long finish. The Refosco grape is a truly indigenous variety with unique aromatic characteristics not found in any other grape. The wines have not undergone oak aging, ensuring the wine remains pleasantly fruity. The taste is full and intense with light tannins. A beautiful wine that pairs excellently with fatty meats such as spare ribs. (grilled short rib) , meat and poultry. Delicious to drink lightly chilled, even in the summer. Would you like to try it? We have purchased a few cases. As an introduction, we have priced the wine affordably. Highly recommended!
In the area around Aquileia, the balance of the microclimate is perfect. The moderate breeze from the nearby Adriatic Sea moderates the summer heat. The warmth of the sun ensures excellent ripening of the fruit, and the significant drop in temperature during the night enhances the primary aromas of the grapes, giving the wines an intense personality.
Monviert produces wines in Cividale del Friuli, with Schioppettino, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Picolit, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, and many others among its best wines. They are located in Spessa di Cividale del Friuli in the province of Udine, close to the Italian border with Slovenia, precisely on the Colli Orientali del Friuli, where the Monviert company owns 18 hectares of vineyards situated between the Julian Alps, which guarantee the grapes ideal protection against cold winds and benefit from the sea breeze coming from the Adriatic Sea. The soils consist of various marl, but also include ponca, gravel, and clay. All of this creates a microclimate and an ideal habitat for the slow and gradual ripening of the grapes and the production of red and white wines of excellent quality.
Today, the Friulian company is a growing wine business in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, and while family management has remained unchanged since the Second World War, having been passed down through three generations, it officially changed its name from Ronchi San Giuseppe to Monviert in 2019.
