The Banker Fibonacci: a Bordeaux blend from South Africa composed according to a mathematical formula

This The Banker Fibonacci can the popular The Chocolate Block could very well dethrone as a good, affordable oak-aged South African red wine. Rich with soft tannins, deep cherry aromas with notes of tobacco and chocolate.

The Artisan Collection The Banker Fibonacci is a characterful red wine from the South African Coastal Region. The wine is structured like a classic Bordeaux blend but follows a striking mathematical formula. The five grape varieties are combined in proportions from the famous Fibonacci sequence.

The blend consists of 55% Cabernet Franc, 21% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, and 3% Malbec.

    • Cabernet Franc gives the wine freshness, spiciness, and refinement.
    • Merlot provides softness and ripe fruit.
    • Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec add structure, color, and extra depth.

How does The Banker Fibonacci taste?

On the nose, you discover red and black currants, cherries, and blackberries. Behind these emerge floral notes, fresh herbs, cedarwood, and a hint of spices. Furthermore, the oak aging imparts nuances of toast, graphite, and dark chocolate.

The taste is concentrated, but not heavy. Ripe dark fruit is supported by fresh acidity and fine, round tannins. The Cabernet Franc, in particular, provides tension and length. Merlot softens the structure, while the other grapes provide power and a dry, lingering finish.

    Aged in French oak

Before fermentation, the grapes undergo a long cold maceration. This gently extracts color, aromas, and delicate flavor compounds from the skins. Subsequently, the wine ages in new French oak. This process results in round tannins, a refined oak influence, and a good balance between fruit and structure.

The grapes come from various parts of the Western Cape. The Cabernet Franc originates from Constantia. Merlot comes from Stellenbosch, while Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec come from Wellington. In this way, the wine combines multiple terroirs and microclimates in one carefully constructed blend.

Why is this wine called Fibonacci?

The Fibonacci sequence consists of numbers where each subsequent number is created by adding the two previous numbers together. In this wine, the numbers 3, 8, 13, 21, and 55 recur as percentages of the different grape varieties. Furthermore, the name The Banker refers to the application of Fibonacci ratios within the financial world.

What do you eat at The Banker Fibonacci?

This powerful and elegant red wine pairs perfectly with hearty meat dishes, stews, and aged cheeses.

    • Lamb rack or leg
    • Grilled beef
    • Game dishes
    • Stews
    • Dishes with mushrooms
    • Lasagne
    • Aged hard cheese or blue cheese

Serve The Banker Fibonacci at around 16 to 18 degrees. Decanting helps the fruit, spices, and wood notes come fully into their own.
