The Paolo Scavino “Bricco Ambrogio” Barolo 2020 is one of the top wines of the Scavino family and reflects the excellent craftsmanship of this iconic winery. Made from 100% Nebbiolo, this Barolo offers an intense and complex aromatic profile. The wine presents vibrant aromas of cherries, blackcurrants, and dried strawberries, combined with floral hints of rose petals and a spicy depth of clove, spices, and leather. It is a wine that is both classic and refined, with a long finish. This wine pairs perfectly with grilled meats, roasted red meats, or rich cheeses, leaving a lasting impression.
Upon pouring, a rich palette of fruity aromas is released. Dried strawberries, ripe cherries, blackcurrants, and plums mingle with dried flowers and herbs such as rose petals and cloves. Aging in wood contributes to a toasted scent of hazelnut, cedarwood, and leather. This Barolo is an excellent match for grilled meat or roasted peppers, and also pairs perfectly with a spicy cheese board. The fruitiness is most pronounced when young, but as time passes, the spices and warm woody notes come more to the fore. For the best experience, we recommend decanting the wine well in advance, especially when drinking it young.
The grapes for the Paolo Scavino “Bricco Ambrogio” Barolo 2020 come from the Bricco Ambrogio vineyard, located in the charming village of Roddi in Piedmont. These vineyards are situated at an altitude of 275 meters and face south, ensuring ideal sun conditions. The soil consists of a mixture of calcareous marl and slate, which contribute to the mineral complexity of the wine. The harvest is carried out by hand, usually in the second half of October, when the vineyards are covered in the famous autumn mist, ‘Nebbia’. After the harvest, the grapes are gently crushed, followed by maceration and natural fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in large vats during the winter months. The wine ages for 10 months in small French oak barrels, followed by 12 months in large oak barrels. After aging in wood, the wine returns to stainless steel for another 10 months before bottling, and then matures for another 10 months in the estate's cellars.
Paolo Scavino, a visionary in the Barolo region, has led the family business for over 60 years, with an emphasis on respecting the unique characteristics of each terroir. The Scavino family owns 29 hectares of vineyards and also cultivates 20 historic Barolo crus. They focus on minimal intervention in the vineyard and cellar, allowing the natural diversity of the terroir to be expressed to the fullest. The house wines are made by Enrico Scavino and his daughters, Enrica and Elisa, and embody a perfect balance between tradition, character, and modern techniques. Founded in 1921, the winery symbolizes the family's rich history and expertise in viticulture.
