No, no apples and snakes here, and we wouldn't exactly call Puglia in Italy “the Garden of Eden.” Although there are plenty of fig leaves to be found here…. No, we are talking about the founding of Cantine Paradiso. This important moment in 1954 is still mentioned in their Paradiso 1954. Primitivo, the flagship wine of Cantine Paradiso. A wine that is deep and intense, figs and currants, dark chocolate, mild and ripe. Full of flavor, present tannins but well integrated, lots of dark fruit (plums, myrtle, berries) and hints of spices. It is like… if you close your eyes, you imagine yourself in paradise for a moment…
After the Second World War, in the 1950s, farmers in Southern Italy were struggling. Grandfather Angelo Paradiso, one of the many poor farmers in Puglia, decided at that time to seek his fortune in wine. He built the Cantine Paradiso winery in 1954. Today, Cantine Paradiso is a major winery, particularly known for its generous red wines made from Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Nero di Troia. Their finest wine, the Paradiso 1954 Primitivo, is made from 100% Primitivo and was founded in 1954.
Cantine Paradiso is located in the village of Cerignola in the province of Foggia, in the southern part of the plain known as Tavoliere delle Puglie. The Tavoliere, with soils of alluvial origin, enjoys protection to the north from the Gargano foothills and to the west from the mountains of the Subappennino-Dauno. To the east lies the Gulf of Manfredonia, which tempers the cold air arriving from the Balkans in winter. The soils are characterized by a high presence of limestone and good drainage capacity. The climate is temperate in winter, with good precipitation and rarely any snow. It is scorching hot in summer: between July and August, temperatures easily rise above 40°C and it hardly rains. Vineyards have always been planted in these climates and at these latitudes.
Did you know:
that Cerignola was the absolute leading player in the European wine trade in the 19th century. Bottles of Nero di Troia were exported in abundance to France as blended wine. That is, of course, strictly forbidden nowadays.
Even today, viticulture remains one of the cornerstones upon which the Cerignola economy relies, along with olive and wheat cultivation. The most widely grown varieties are Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Moscato. Less common, and primarily intended for bottling, are local grapes such as Nero di Troia, Negramaro, and Primitivo. But certainly no less interesting. Try them all! They are all for sale with us!
