Barbaresco is the little sister of Barolo – and this is why!

Made from the same grape, but more refined in style and usually ready to drink sooner. In the glass, aromas of ripe strawberries, cherries, and violets greet you. With this wine from Produttori del Barbaresco, you immediately imagine yourself in the rolling hills of Northern Italy. PiedmontThis 100% Nebbiolo comes from one of the most respected wine cooperatives in the world. Thanks to its floral character, earthy elements, and perfectly balanced tannins, this is a wine that stays with you.

Both the novice wine enthusiast and the seasoned connoisseur will find what they are looking for here. The combination of traditional methods and modern precision results in a wine with personality. This is Barbaresco as Barbaresco is meant to be: powerful, refined, and with a soul.

How does this special wine taste?

This wine unfolds on the palate like a story. You first taste the ripe red fruit, followed by floral accents and a subtle spiciness. The tannins are present but elegant, with a firm structure that gives the wine backbone. The earthy profile brings depth, while the leathery notes provide extra layering. Flavors such as porcini mushrooms and a hint of licorice round off the whole. This wine has impressive aging potential – 10 to 15 years of aging is no problem at all. The acidity is generous, as befits an authentic Barbaresco. Excellent to pair with:

    • Pastas and risotto with truffle (!)

    • Roasted veal or beef with rosemary

    • Mushroom dishes, especially porcini

    • Game dishes such as partridge and pheasant

    • Aged cheeses, for example Gorgonzola

    • Spicy meat dishes and stews

What is the story behind Produttori del Barbaresco?

The history of Produttori del Barbaresco dates back to 1884, when eight grape growers founded a cooperative together at the oenology school in Alba. In doing so, they laid the foundation for the distinction between Barolo and Barbaresco. During fascism, the cooperative was temporarily dissolved, but was revived in 1958.

Today, the cooperative consists of 56 members with a combined total of more than 100 hectares of vineyards around the village of Barbaresco. Thanks to a smart system, every winegrower strives for top quality: no one is allowed to keep the best fruit for themselves. Everything goes to the cooperative, and those who supply excellent grapes are rewarded for it. This focus on quality over quantity works excellently. According to Robert Parker, they set the global standard for wine cooperatives.

    How is this Barbaresco made?

After a 24-day maceration, the wine ages for another 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. It usually does not come onto the market until five years after the harvest – tradition and patience are paramount here. This classic Barbaresco is a blend of grapes from several vineyards surrounding the village. In exceptional years, the cooperative even produces nine different single-vineyard Riservas.

That is – outside of Burgundy – exceptional: nine crus from a single grape, a single producer, a single vintage. The vineyards are situated in beautiful locations around Barbaresco. Thanks to this ideal terroir and the craftsmanship of the makers, this results in astonishing value for money. This is Barbaresco in its purest form.
