Wow, this is one of those wines that does a little dance in your mouth. It has a lot of flavor, is soft on the tannins, and complex with a full body. Many aromas of both red and black fruit. Think strawberry and raspberry, but also blackberries. In the finish, spiciness of licorice and pepper emerges, along with hints of cedarwood and leather. The RedHeads Coco Rotie is a lively red wine with an expressive character. All supported by a floral touch. This special wine from McLaren Vale, South Australia, combines Syrah with a touch Viognier for added complexity. The hand-selected grapes from 30-year-old vines ensure an intense taste experience. The silky tannins make this Australian beauty instantly accessible but also suitable for aging.
Coco Rotie is a reference to the well-known, northernmost AOC in the north.Rhône, de Côte Rotie. Very beautiful and robust wines come from here made from the same grape, Syrah. McLaren Vale is just like the Barossa Valley one of the most famous areas for Shiraz/Syrah in Australia. The regions are known for their very high-quality old-vine wines.
In the glass, the RedHeads Coco Rotie reveals itself with a deep dark red color and seductive fruit aromas. The interplay of Syrah and Viognier creates a perfect balance between power and elegance. The wine displays a rich palate in which the fruit takes center stage. This characterful red wine is an excellent accompaniment to lamb and rich beef stews. The soft tannin structure and vibrant fruit also make it delightful as a glass on its own.
RedHeads Studio, founded by a group of idiosyncratic young winemakers, is known for its unconventional approach in McLaren Vale. Their philosophy revolves around ‘liberating’ high-quality grapes from South Australia. The Coco Rotie is made with great precision, with the grapes fermenting together in open vats. For fifteen days, the ‘cap’ is manually submerged twice daily for optimal extraction. After fermentation, the wine ages for fourteen months in oak barrels, a quarter of which are new.
The story behind the RedHeads Coco Rotie dates back to the year 638. The label tells the legend of an insatiable Monkey King. No amount of wine could quench his divine thirst, and no mountain of roasted coconuts could satisfy his heavenly hunger. This mythical history inspires the character of this contemporary wine.
James Suckling 91 points: “A meaty syrah with aromas of black fruit, cocoa, tar and walnut husk on the nose. Firm and savory with a full body and chewy tannins. 96% syrah and 4% viognier. Better in 2024. Screw cap.”
Perswijn 15/20: Sultry, sweet fruit, cherries, tobacco, licorice. Warm, ripe, aged, sweet note.
Jancis Robinson about the 2019 vintage 16/20: “Pale crimson. Sweet, slightly ‘industrial’ nose. But rich and nicely balanced savoury Shiraz fruit on the palate. Not too heavy and not too alcoholic-tasting. Good balance. Sweet start and saline, quite long finish. The palate is much more winning than the nose.”
Wine Spectator 91 points for the 2018 vintage: “Blood orange, maraschino cherry and raspberry puree flavors are pure, fresh and supple, with an elegance to the satiny tannins. Clove, matcha green tea, turmeric and toasted rye notes linger on the finish. Syrah and Viognier.”

Wine Enthusiast on the 2016 vintage: 91 points: “A homage to the famous Northern Rhône region, with extra helpings of Aussie sunshine. It bursts with baking spices, tangy red currant, rhubarb, raspberry, dried herbs, soy sauce and mocha. There are florals and warm stone tones there, too. Full-bodied but not heavy or rich, there's a strong savory streak on the palate that compliments the tangy fruit and fine-grained tannins.”
