In 1962, 19 winegrowers from San Marzano joined forces and founded “Cantine San Marzano”. And to celebrate this, they are producing the San Marzano Anniversario 62 Riserva. Primitivo di Manduria. Moreover, it is also their best wine from their extensive portfolio. This is Serious Stuff! The wine has an intense ruby red color. Complex aromas of dried plums, cherries, tobacco, and spices. A very full-bodied wine. Primitivo, soft and rich with fine, slightly grainy tannins, also clear impressions of cocoa, coffee and vanilla at the end. Really great intensity and a truly hedonistic glass. Yes, 1962 was a great year for the wine world and we are so happy that we can offer you this wine, 58 years later. A heck of a wine!
It actually goes perfectly with a moment by the fireplace, but above all on the table with large cuts of meat... Leg of lamb, Boeuf Wellington, wild boar stew... red wine sauce with a touch of dark chocolate. Delicious!
This Anniversario 62 Riserva has aged for 18 months in French and American oak barrels. Furthermore, the grapes for the San Marzano Anniversario 62 Riserva come from very old vineyards in San Marzano and Sava. The soil is predominantly red with a fine texture and a generally calcareous subsoil with some exposed rocks. The renowned redness of these soils is due to the presence of iron oxides. Because the climate is characterized by high temperatures throughout the year, very little rainfall, and a wide temperature range between day and night, there is actually a positive influence on the quality of the grapes. The grape is put to work here.
This cooperative now numbers more than 1,200 growers and utilizes modern and technologically advanced facilities without compromising Puglia’s very old wine tradition. San Marzano is located in Puglia, in the heart of the highly acclaimed DOC “Primitivo di Manduria”, between two seas (the Ionian and the Adriatic). The provinces of Taranto and Brindisi are a place where vineyards and olive trees grow side by side on a red soil. This soil and the Mediterranean terroir play an essential role in the production of high-quality wines. The climate is extreme, with difficult conditions: drought, frost, and fierce Sirocco winds. However, these passionate winemakers ensure that even grapes from the oldest vineyards yield full-bodied and elegant wines. Furthermore, manual harvesting and strict selection on the conveyor belt ensure that only the best material is used.
