In the region where Lugana is produced in Lombardy, there is also a very small, separate DOC, namely that of San Martino della Battaglia. In this appellation, only the Tuchì grape may be used. This was a DOC with a very high risk of extinction. It is still one of the smallest appellations in Italy. But it is slowly coming back to life thanks to the Selva Capuzza Campo del Soglio San Martino. A refined, fresh wine with a truly distinctive character. Let’s take a closer look…
The Selva is light yellow in color. On the nose, there are both spicy notes such as fennel and sage, as well as distinct fruitiness like peach and pineapple. A hint of almond and white blossom plays in the background. When drinking the wine, it is truly pronounced, almost savory, with a light body and fresh acidity. The wine is full of character, with a freshness and a slight bitterness that lingers in the finish.
The birth of Campo del Soglio San Martino in 1988 was with the intention of making this wine forgotten by producing it at the highest possible level of quality and making the most of its potential. At the time, the name Tocai was used for the grape from which the wine was made. In 2008, the European Community banned the use of the name Tocai and reserved it for Tokaji wines from Hungary. This is why, from the 2007 vintage onwards, a question mark dominates the label on the back. The grape's old name Tuchi, which was only used locally, is now on the label of the Selva Capuzza Campo del Soglio San Martino
At Selva Capuzza, they feel a very deep connection with this vine, and this has led them to stubbornly seek the best possible expression; Campo del Soglio is a wine in which elegance and finesse are the two most prominent elements.
It is not a wine for those seeking power or immediate sensation. It is a wine to listen to, a slow, shy wine. It finishes quietly and leaves the palate clean, with the memory of a balanced and subtle taste.
It is one of the wines that cost them the most effort at Selva Capuzza. However, it gives us the most satisfaction. Their first goal was to protect the DOC from extinction; then the awards, being the first to receive them from Slow Food, which considered it one of the 270 best Italian “everyday” white wines, the 2 Gambero Rosso glasses, and the space dedicated to it by the major national press.
