A Bordeaux from the Italian Alto Adige? Tramin pulls it off! This Tramin Loam Cabernet/Merlot Riserva is made from the Bordeaux blend. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. LOAM refers to the loam soil in the vineyards, and thanks to the high altitude of the vineyards, the wine has a unique character. Fruity, juicy, and above all elegant. Yet, thanks to the very long aging, the wine possesses delicious full notes of dark chocolate and vanilla. A delicious wine with spicy cheeses, roasted meats, and game.
The deep dark ruby red wine smells of juicy red fruit such as wild cherries and black cherries, with a distinct note of dark chocolate and light spices. On the palate, the LOAM is beautifully balanced. Juicy fruit, lovely acidity, and salty minerals. Pleasant wood notes with chocolate and vanilla give the wine a full body. The tannins are soft and beautifully integrated, and the finish is delightfully long with cassis and vanilla. The wine can be enjoyed young but also ages well. This wine remains fantastic for at least 10 years after the harvest! Serve the wine with spicy cheeses, roasted meats, or game dishes.
The vineyards are situated at an altitude of approximately 250 to 350 meters in Alto Adige, northern Italy. The soil here consists mainly of loam (hence the name LOAM) and calcareous gravel, which retains heat well. The vines are about 15 to 25 years old, allowing them to produce higher quality grapes. The climate in this area features large temperature variations due to sunny, warm days with Mediterranean influences and cool nights caused by the downdraft of the Alpine wind.
The grapes are harvested from early to late October, at the moment they have reached optimal ripeness. Immediately after the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and fermentation begins. This takes place in large oak vats, where the juice is regularly pumped over the skins. This ensures maximum extraction of all aromas and gives the wine a deeper color. After fermentation, the juice ages for at least 12 months in small oak barriques (225L). After this first year of aging, the wine is blended and ages for another 6 months in large oak barrels. The wine is now ready to be bottled and ages for at least another 6 months in the estate's cellars before being released onto the market.
Christian Schrott, a priest and wine enthusiast from Paris, decided to establish a cooperative of winemakers in Tramin (Termeno) in 1889. More than 100 years later, Cantina Tramin has grown into a company with a collaboration between approximately 270 winegrowers across a total area of 230 hectares. Cantina Tramin maintains very strict standards within the association, resulting in the achievement of an exceptionally high level of quality over the years. The efforts of this company, and especially those of the brilliant winemaker Willi Stürz, have not gone unnoticed in the wine world outside Italy for long. Today, their wines are known both nationally and internationally for their consistently high quality.
