On the southern side of the Alps lies the Alto Adige wine region, also known as South Tyrol. They speak German there, but eat and think Italian! It seems a bit like trying to keep two minds to ourselves, but when it comes to wine, there is clearly focus here! You notice this immediately with the Cantina Tramin Sauvignon Blanc. It hits you right in the heart and doesn't let go! It shoots into your nose like a rocket! Wow, what fireworks and an explosion of aromas! Intense with elderflower, freshly cut grass, and tomato stems (hey home cooks, try cooking those along in a tomato sauce for an even greater tomato experience; it really makes a difference, just remember to lift them out afterwards...). Accompanied by spicy notes of paprika, Granny Smith apple, and gooseberry. The freshness and intense flavor of this wine provide a very crisp mouthfeel. High pressure sprays in front of your taste buds. Wow, that hits hard! Great with goat cheese salad, Caprese salad, Ceviche, and of course the Dutch one (as well the Thai) mussel pot. And well, of course….Dutch asparagus, that goes without saying, of course.
The grapes come from vineyards in Tramin and Montagna, where the vines grow on clay soil with pebbles and a high limestone content. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 350–500 meters. Warm days, cold nights, so extra aroma! The grapes for the Cantina Tramin Sauvignon Blanc are gently pressed immediately after harvesting and then placed in stainless steel tanks. The must ferments at a controlled temperature of 18°C and undergoes no malolactic fermentation. This results in plenty of acidity. No oak aging. Pure, clean, and no frills! And bone dry!
It was the year 1889 when Christian Schrott, a priest and wine lover from Paris, decided to establish a cooperative of winemakers in Tramin (Termeno). More than 100 years later, Cantina Tramin has grown into a company coordinating cooperation between approximately 270 winegrowers across a total area of 230 hectares. Cantina Tramin maintains very strict standards within the cooperative, resulting in the achievement of an exceptionally high level of quality over the years. The efforts of this company, and especially those of the brilliant winemaker Willi Stürz, have not gone unnoticed in the wine world outside Italy for long. Today, their wines are known both nationally and internationally for their consistently high quality.
The Alto Adige DOC encompasses most of the wines produced in the Alto Adige or Sudtirol region of the Trentino-Alto Adige region in Northern Italy. The DOC is subdivided into more than 30 levels, depending on districts or municipalities.
The “Cepage” wines (made from a single grape) from the bilingual Alto Adige region are known for their distinctive character and excellent quality. This quality stems from the outstanding Alpine terroir, which manifests itself in, among other things, fresh, fruity, and lively wines. This is also the case at the Cantina Tramin cooperative.
