To clear up the first misunderstanding right away: Orange wine is NOT made from oranges! They make Orange wine with white grapes, and the grapes go into the vat for fermentation along with the skins. This is in contrast to conventional white wine, where the grapes are pressed and the skins are separated from the liquid. This skin contact is essential in the making of orange wine and can last from a few days to even a few months. The skins contain color pigments, phenols, and tannins that impart aroma, color, and flavor to the wine, giving it its orange color and its unique taste and texture.
The first time our tasting panel tasted this orange wine Albana Vigna Rocca from Tre Monti will linger in our memory for a long time. What a powerful variety of aromas and flavors! We were laughingly glad we were already seated. This orange wine can truly be called unique.
The process of making orange wine is very old. However, due to the recent rediscovery of this ancient process, it has resurfaced. Contemporary orange wine producers use a technique that originated 8,000 years ago in Georgia in the Caucasus. Here, wine was fermented in large underground amphorae (called Qvevri) that were buried and sealed with stones and beeswax. By burying the amphora, the temperature remains cool and constant. After 5-6 months of fermentation, the underground amphora was opened again and the wine bottled in amphorae of more manageable sizes.
This orange wine Albana Vigna Rocca from Tre Monti in Emilia Romagna has a brilliant, full amber color. On the nose, the scent of ripe melon and apricots, orange zest (the thin orange peel of oranges), honey, and flowers. The taste is full-bodied with ripe peach and plum, and a pleasant bitter almond on the finish. Serve the wine slightly chilled (10-12 degrees).
Orange wine is ideally suited as a dinner wine. Because the wines possess such a full flavor of ripe orange-yellow fruit, they pair very well with a wide range of dishes: fish soup, risotto, roasted poultry, and veal. The ripe apricot flavor also goes very well with spicy curry dishes from Asia or, for example, Moroccan cuisine.
