Wine critic James Suckling gives this wine 92 points: “A fruity and crunchy grenache with cherries, thyme and hot stones. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins. Silky core of cherries at the center with a vivid finish.”
Val Joanis Luberon Les Griottes Rouge is a powerful yet refined red wine from the Luberon, a region situated precisely between Provence and the southern Rhône. Geographically, the estate is located just twenty kilometers from Aix-en-Provence, but viticulturally, the appellation belongs to the Rhône. This is reflected in the style: ripe dark fruit and spiciness, combined with fresh tension and structure.
In the glass, you smell plenty of fruit, such as blackcurrants, ripe cherries, dried plums, and light smoky notes. On the palate, the wine is full and powerful, with lots of dark fruit, soft tannins, and a spicy undertone reminiscent of bay leaf and pepper. The finish is long and warm, without becoming heavy.
The grapes for Les Griottes Rouge come from higher-altitude vineyards around the Val Joanis estate, at an altitude of approximately 500 meters. This location ensures cooler nights, which helps preserve freshness in the grapes. The soil consists of limestone and clay, covered with a thick layer of pebbles, similar to soils in parts of the Rhône. This combination ensures good drainage and heat retention, which promotes ripening while simultaneously giving structure to the wine.
The climate is Mediterranean, with many hours of sunshine and sufficient ventilation due to its location between mountain ranges. This creates a balance between ripeness and freshness, characteristic of quality wines from the Luberon.
After the harvest, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Skin maceration of 15 to 20 days adds extra color, flavor, and tannins. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine ages for approximately 12 months in French oak, about 30% of which is new. This aging adds structure and subtle wood notes without overpowering the fruit. The result is a wine with depth, while retaining freshness and drinkability.
Due to its full flavor and spicy character, Val Joanis Luberon Les Griottes Rouge is very suitable for rich and savory dishes. Good pairings include:
