The Val Joanis Luberon Rouge originates from the Luberon, but geographically it is always a bit unclear whether the Luberon belongs to the Provence or Rhône region. The Luberon house Val Joanis is located just 20 kilometers north of the wine village of Aix-en-Provence, but in terms of appellation, it belongs to the Rhône wines. Luberon, in the Southern Rhône, has warm, sunny, and cool nights. This results in deliciously fruity, but also spicy and powerful wines. In any case, Val Joanis makes no distinction and produces wines typical of the south of France. The Val Joanis Luberon Rouge is a blend of Syrah, supplemented with Grenache Noir. Smooth and round with sufficient depth. A firm structure and a good balance between juice and tannins. Delicious, fine fruit expression of blackcurrant, kirsch, liquorice, black pepper, a light spiciness, and a nice roasted note.
Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks with a 10-day maceration. Subsequently, 30% of the wine ages for 6 months in French oak, one-third of which is new. This adds a lovely touch of vanilla and licorice notes. Excellent with roasted lamb, leg of lamb rubbed with a Mediterranean herb rub, or, for example, lamb kebab with a tangy yogurt sauce. It promises to be a delightful evening.
The Luberon is a stunningly beautiful region, and the same applies to the Val Joanis estate, which consists of 400 hectares of lush, pristine, and protected nature. The 100 hectares of vineyards lie on clayey limestone and benefit from the hot, sun-drenched days and cool nights. The character of the soil and the very favorable climate are reflected in the wines of Val Joanis. They are also known for their beautifully landscaped gardens, which are open to visitors. A visit is truly worthwhile.
The Luberon became very popular thanks to the writer Peter MayleHe wrote about life in this beautiful part of France in his book ‘A Year in Provence’. Thanks to this bestseller, many Dutch and English people discovered the Luberon. In his stories, the area is characterized by beautiful hills, rock formations, vast vineyards, and picturesque mountain villages. In the mountain villages, you can enjoy strolling through the narrow streets, admiring various sights, and enjoying the stunning landscape. Ultimately, it was less pleasant that Peter Mayle had to move again to find his peace and quiet because of all the tourists who were peeking into his garden without looking. A beautiful film has also been made based on the book.
