The Montepulciano grape from Abruzzo. Overripe, sultry and wonderfully concentrated

The Valle Reale Appassimento Rosso is made using the Appassimento method. The grapes are first dried before pressing. Italians love it! This greatly increases the concentration of the aromas. A special Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, fully organic and complex in style. A full-bodied wine with a spicy and fruity nose. On the palate, clear notes of plums, black cherry, and fine spices. 100% organically certified. Pair with delicious veal in Marsala sauce, Pecorino, and Parmesan cheese. Hard cheeses go wonderfully with this!

Nowadays, the Appassimento method is used throughout Italy. It is one of the oldest winemaking methods in Italy. Even before Roman times, bunches of grapes were laid on straw mats in Italy, Greece, and the French Alps to allow the grapes to ripen better. At Valle Reale, they approach it slightly differently. Here, they let the grapes dry on the vines for two months longer. Then the grapes are harvested, and the final drying phase takes place in the cellar in plastic crates.

    Valle Reale

Located in the green heart of Italy lies Abruzzo, now dotted with national parks brimming with natural beauty. Here, wild animals such as wolves and brown bears even roam. The small vineyards of Valle Reale lie against the foothills of the Southern Apennines, at an altitude that can vary from 150 to 450 meters above sea level. Here, in winter, icy winds from the Gran Sasso rage through the valley, carved out by rivers such as the Popoli and the Pescara. The valley, an oasis of 100% nature, is protected by strict environmental laws but above all by the absence of much human activity, except that the conditions for grape cultivation here are sublime. A unique and fully organically managed place.

Valle Reale features grapes from five organically managed vineyards, including a historic vineyard and cellar that resembles a wine cave. Benedictine monks have been using this wine cave since around 1300. Some of the vineyards are situated at such high altitudes that the harvest can take place relatively late. As a result, the wines are full of aroma and often benefit from a longer aging period in the bottle. Others are located slightly lower, but here too, you will not find the (over)ripe wines that can be found in the coastal region of the Abruzzo; instead, you will find fresh, fruity, and mineral wines grown on very stony, sandy soils.
