Unfortunately, legislation in the Languedoc prohibits the term “Grand Cru” from appearing on the label, but we believe it should be allowed. This is hardly surprising, considering this Domaine de l’Ostal Estibals is made by the owner of Château Lynch-Bages in Bordeaux. They aim for nothing but the highest quality! Their name should only appear on the highest quality! Truly a class wine at an excellent price here too! Made from Syrah, Carignan, and Grenache, they produce a deep garnet-red, expressive, open wine here in the Minervois with aromas of black fruit, strawberry, blackcurrant, violets, herbs, and a hint of toast. The taste is full and creamy, yet with sufficient freshness and smooth tannins that provide just that extra bite. Delicious with grilled beef and (Mediterranean) stews. Long and deep finish. A magnificent wine, worthy of a “cru”!
After a four-year search throughout the Languedoc, Château Lynch-Bages owner Jean-Michel Cazes and his son Jean-Charles finally found a suitable location in the Minervois for their new project. At the foot of the Montagne Noir, they purchased an estate in 2002 comprising 150 hectares of slate soil mixed with sandstone and pebbles, one-third of which was planted with vines and 25 hectares with olive trees. They would go on to plant even more vineyards to ultimately realize their dream: producing wines in the Languedoc that perfectly match their quality standards, just as they apply to their Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé. Consequently, all requirements for the Domaine de l’Ostal Estibals are at the highest level!
Domaine de l‘Ostal is situated in a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and fairly mild winters. The vineyards have a southern exposure and the soil is a mosaic of marl on calcareous sandstone. Rosemary and wild lavender grow abundantly in the “garrigues” landscape. After vinification, the blend ages in oak barrels for a year.
