A very successful ‘remake’ of a Premier Cru Bordeaux from California…

The Bernardus Marinus has been an iconic wine from California for years, because it is a classic “Bordeaux“a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. This wine easily knocks much more expensive Grand Cru Bordeaux off the table because it has that quality. Actually, it is a bargain…”

Californian remake of a classic Bordeaux made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The wine will keep for at least 10-15 years and ages beautifully. The wine has a deep dark color, and on the nose, it features delicious aromas of ripe black fruit such as blackberries, currants, and cherries, complemented by cedarwood, spices, vanilla, tobacco, and chocolate. Truly the famous Bordeaux nose, but without the potential harsh green edges…
The elegant taste is powerful with notes of black fruit, spices such as pepper and bay leaf complemented by vanilla, liquorice, leather, tobacco (cigar box), cocoa, and pencil shavings. Truly a “grand vin,” as they tend to say in France.

The Marinus is a classic at a Côte de boeuf from the grill with herb butter, but also fantastic with a Roastbeef for Sunday. Not really a wine for vegans... The firm but ripe tannins in the wine simply call for a nice piece of meat.

The grapes come from the Carmel Valley area, where red grapes grow best in ultimate conditions: very well-draining, gravelly soil and a relatively cool terroir. The lower temperatures here are caused by the thick fog that regularly drifts in from the sea. As a result, the grapes ripen more slowly, ensuring an optimum of aromas. For the Bernardus Marinus, the grapes are harvested by hand, and the wine ages for a period of 24 to 30 months in new French oak. The result is a beautiful, refined, rich, and ripe wine.

    From Volkswagen to wine

Former Volkswagen importer and founder Bernardus Marinus Pon (1936-2019) regarded wine as an art form that transcends the ordinary. It was his dream to produce a red wine with Bernardus that rivals the best wines from French Bordeaux. From places all over the world, the Dutchman chose Carmel Valley in California. For about 50 years now, more and more winemakers have been discovering how suitable this relatively new wine region is for growing Bordeaux grape varieties. Bernardus's Marinus and Featherbow vineyards are located in the Cachagua region of Carmel Valley.
