An enigma, a riddle, a secret, a mystery. The resolution is only revealed when the cork leaves the bottle. Pour it into a beautiful large wine glass and close your eyes. Wow, what a delicious aroma! Deep, sweet, ripe aromas of dark red forest fruit and blackcurrants. Light liquorice and some woody notes. A well-balanced wine with soft and ripe tannins. Made using the appassimento method, where the grapes are dried before pressing, you can easily compare this Biscardo Enigma Appassimento Sangiovese to a Amarone! With an average score of 4.3 on Vivino, this is one of the best-selling wines in this class in the Netherlands. In any case, it offers excellent value for money. Amazing with grilled red meat and strong cheeses, but also a delight to drink on its own.
In the glass, the wine is intense and dark, almost black! Sultry and soft aromas of red and black fruit fill the glass. Cherries, blackberries, and forest fruits. A warm touch of chocolate and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is like a warm blanket. Full-bodied, soft, blackberry jam with chocolate and licorice. Sweet tannins and a long finish. The Biscardo Enigma Appassimento Sangiovese can be enjoyed on its own; the wine is so well-structured and delicious on its own. However, the wine comes into its own even better with fine dishes. A bistecca fiorentina, stuffed veal breast, but also with aged cheeses. Thanks to the sweet notes, it also pairs very well with spicy dishes.
The Biscardo Enigma is made of 100% Sangiovese-grapes. These grow in the vineyards surrounding the town of Rubicone in the Italian Emilia Romagna. The grapes dry on the vines until they turn into raisins. The manual harvest takes place at the end of autumn. After the harvest, the grapes dry further until they reach optimal concentration. The grapes are pressed in December, after which the wine ferments and ages on the lees until the end of March. 30% of the wine ages in oak barrels, giving the wine its round spiciness.
The Biscardo family is known for their wines with excellent drinkability and price-quality ratio. Most of the wines come from Veneto and, just like this Enigma, are incredibly popular! These include the Neropasso, Oropasso, Rosapasso, Amarone della Valpolicella and RipassoBiscardo Vini is one of the oldest Italian wine families that still runs its own business. The company was founded in Verona in 1878 and has remained in the family ever since. Brothers Maurizio and Martino currently lead the family business. With the recent addition of Maddalena to the team, the future of this family business is secured. She, too, remains steadfast in her commitment to the quality, culture, and passion for tradition of over 100 years of winemaking.
Every year, they are showered with awards from all over the world. Renowned wine magazines give them an honorable mention!
