In the high-altitude vineyards, 95% are planted with Tempranillo, supplemented by Graciano and Garnacha. The vines are bush vines with an average age of 60 years. Due to the advanced age of the vines, they have a naturally low yield. Additionally, harvesting is very selective. Ultimately, this results in the most concentrated wine from this house. The Bodega Valserrano Rioja Finca Monteviejo is very intense in color, aroma, and taste. Here, despite the oak aging, the emphasis remains on the rich, generous fruit. On the nose, it has seductive aromas of ripe dark red blackberries, cherries, sweet dried fruit such as figs and apricots, some vanilla cream, and nutmeg. Full and soft on the palate with fine oak notes and a rich taste of fruit, sweet tannins, spices, and hints of candied cherries and plums. Despite its power, the wine is elegant and harmonious with beautiful acidity, good structure, and a nice length. This is a wine that can certainly age in your cellar for another ten years. Fantastic with game, such as Deer back or roe deer. When it comes out of the cellar a bit later, slightly aged, it pairs wonderfully with Haas.
In the days leading up to the harvest, the grapes undergo an extensive selection in the vineyard, during which affected grapes and unripe bunches are removed. The good grapes are then allowed to ripen beautifully for a short while longer. After the manual harvesting of the ripe grapes, a long period of skin maceration follows to extract as many aromas, color, and tannins from the skins as possible. The wine ages for 18 months in new barrels of fine oak from the Allier and the Vosges. Here, high-density French oak is used, meaning the wine ages less in the barrel than a standard Rioja Reserva or Gran Reserva. The aging takes place over a longer period in the bottle—in your cellar, that is. Therefore, with the Bodega Valserrano Rioja Finca Monteviejo, expect higher intensity and more fruit than with traditional Riojas.
