Piedmont? Isn't that a region with only heavy wines like Barolo and Barbera? Well, quite a lot, but they certainly still have a very interesting secret weapon up their sleeve: the Braida Brachetto d’Acqui. This is a very tasty, fresh, sweet wine that is lightly sparkling. Perfectly suited for a pleasant conclusion to a heavy dinner. Light-footed, elegant, leaves the mouth nice and fresh again, and very importantly: also very low in alcohol: only 5.5%.
The Braida Brachetto d’Acqui is made from the indigenous Brachetto grape and comes from the vicinity of the town of Acqui Terme. They employ a clever trick here: during the fermentation of the juice, the fermentation is halted by means of cooling and filtration. By using overpressure, the carbon dioxide produced is retained in the wine. As a result, not all the sugars are fermented, and the wine remains slightly sweet with a pleasantly high grape juice content. The Brachetto d’Acqui is effortlessly smooth, soft, and lightly sparkling. Good balance between acidity and fruit. Deliciously liquid wild strawberries and raspberries with a slight kick from a touch of bitterness and some alcohol at the finish. Super refreshing and surprising! Also very suitable for the young wine consumer. Great with desserts, yes indeed! Traditional Dutch semolina pudding with strawberry sauce (no, not Tova!!), chocolate mousse, or crispy meringue with sour cream and fresh red fruit! Delicious!
The Braida properties are situated between the districts of Monferrato, Astigiano, and Langhe. At the heart of the operation are the vineyards of Rocchetta Tanaro. Braida means the “forest of thoughts” over there in Montebruna, and the vines are lined up and ready to give life. Biodiversity and production rigor, genius, imagination, and respect for tradition are at the top of the list for Giacomo Bologna’s firm.
The story of Braida is connected to that of Rocchetta Tanaro, a small town in the Monferrato region. “My village is no surprise, it is ten vineyards, six houses, one church”: these are the words of chansonnier Paolo Frola, who is also the local doctor in Rocchetta. The song was written with Gianni Mura, who drank the Barbera from Rocchetta. Some of the ten vineyards in Frola’s song belong to Braida. They were owned by grandfather Giuseppe, who bequeathed them to his son Giacomo, and are now cultivated by Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna. The estate is the product of the enthusiasm, passion, and enterprising courage of a bona fide Rocchettese, Giacomo Bologna.
