Barbera, a grape originating from the region Piedmont. This region is a favorite holiday destination situated at the foot of the Alps. Known for its gently rolling hills, cool nights, morning mist, authentic villages, and, of course, its fantastic wine. Think, for example, of red Barolo and Barbaresco wines or the sweet dessert wine Moscato d’Asti. The Barbera d’Asti DOCG from Bricco dei Guazzi also fits perfectly into this list of fantastic wines from Piedmont.

    Bricco dei Guazzi

A few kilometers from Casale Monferrato lies the small village of Olivola. A small municipality with just over a hundred inhabitants, and a beautiful landscape designed by the winemakers, featuring vast vineyards on the hills of Monferrato. The Bricco dei Guazzi estate is situated on top of a hill, “bric” in the local dialect, and is surrounded by thirty hectares of vineyards. As early as the 15th century, the winery was established beneath the noble villa of the Guazzo family. This part of the cellar is still in use as a tasting room. The vineyards are located on sun-drenched hills with white marl soil containing chalk, which causes the sun to reflect onto the grapes. This ensures optimal ripening of the grapes.

The Barbera grapes are hand-picked. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 100 to 150 meters. After careful selection and gentle pressing, the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by 6 months of wood aging and finally a minimum of 4 months of bottle aging.

    Tasting note

Bright ruby red color with violet hues. On the nose, expressive aromas of dark fruit such as blackcurrant, black cherries, and blackberries. A touch of spiciness. On the palate, it is a medium-bodied wine with beautiful, refined acidity and an extremely elegant tannic texture. Slightly spicy at the finish while retaining freshness and with a persistent flavor. Serve at 18-20 °C.

    Food and wine pairing

Beautiful in combination with rich pastas such as Porcini/Truffle, red meat, game, and mature cheeses. But also pairs excellently with a pasta with a tomato sauce base.
