What a special glass this is. The Casa Ermelinda Sandstone Castelao & Shiraz is silky smooth, bursting with fruit, and has light, fine tannins. An exquisite combination of the typical Portuguese Castelao grape (90%) with a touch of Shiraz (10%). Powerful, full-bodied, and spicy with a hint of vanilla and caramel. This Sandstone Castelao & Shiraz therefore receives a 4.2 on Vivino! A top wine with grilled meat, poultry, and a spicy cheese board.
The Sandstone Castelao & Shiraz is ruby red in color and has beautiful aromas of ripe red fruit with vanilla, chocolate, and a spicy touch. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, soft, and luscious with soft tannins. Slightly sweet thanks to the sun-baked fruit, but beautifully balanced thanks to the elegant acidity. A lovely combination of fermentation in stainless steel and 4 months of wood aging. A fine wine with grilled meat or poultry. Thanks to the luscious fruit, this wine can also handle a chili pepper!
The vineyards of Casa Ermelinda are located on the Setúbal peninsula, south of the Portuguese capital Lisbon. The wine producer Casa Ermelinda Freitas is regarded by many as the best wine producer in this region, thanks to the beautiful location of the vineyards. The fermentation of the Castelao grapes and Shiraz grapes are transferred to stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature. This preserves the full fruit aromas and keeps the fresh acidity in balance. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to small French oak barrels and ages for 4 months. This imparts delicious vanilla and caramel notes to the wine. The Casa Ermelineda Sandstone Castelao & Shiraz is delightful when drunk young, but can age in the cellar for up to 5 years. The result is an earthier and spicier wine.
Casa Ermelinda Freitas is a renowned winery in the small village of Aguas de Moura, about 50 kilometers southeast of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. The estate is deeply rooted in this region, and today the fourth generation is at the helm: Leonor Freitas. Leonor expanded the estate from 60 to 440 hectares of vineyards and planted a wide variety of indigenous grapes, including Castelao. The vineyards of Casa Ermelinda are among the finest in Portugal, and in 2022, Mundus Vini named Casa Ermelinda Freitas the Best Portuguese Producer of the Year!
