In Puglia, the summers are very hot, but always cool down significantly at night due to the proximity of the sea. It can be very dry there, but in a normal year, just enough rain falls in just the right period. In any case, the Negroamaro ripens beautifully there. The color of this Casato di Melzi Negroamaro is intense ruby red, almost black. The aroma is intense and fruity with hints of blackberries, cherries, and vanilla, with notes of thyme and a touch of leather. Lightly aged with almonds, it has a warm and sultry taste, not too heavy, deliciously juicy with plenty of liveliness. This Casato di Melzi Negroamaro has a full body, is velvety and harmonious, with a long and tasty finish. This beautiful wine is made from 100% Negroamaro grapes. Negroamaro is one of the most important grapes of Apulia, and to be precise, in Salento. The grapes are harvested at full ripeness, and after destemming and pressing, they undergo temperature-controlled fermentation. This process is followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in stainless steel and in the bottle. It is delicious served with spicy and slightly sweet Moroccan Tajine dishes. But also delicious with mature and spicy cheeses, and dishes in which aubergine plays the leading role. And on top of that, it is so easy and accessible that it is also simply delicious with drinks. Black and bitter has never tasted so good!

The Salento region

This region, which forms the heel of the Italian boot, was once primarily known for its enormous production of heavy red wine that was exported to be blended with less successful harvests in cooler countries. Even today, less than 5% of the production falls under a DOC. It is still Italy's largest grape producer, but since the late 1990s, there has been a very positive evolution, and suddenly very affordable and original red and rosé wines are coming from there.

Salento encompasses the three southernmost provinces of Puglia: Tarantino, Brindisi, and Lecce. The wine-growing area covered by the Salento IGT designation thus stretches over 180 kilometers (100 miles) from north to south. It runs from the white beaches of Leuca, past the port city of Tarantino, along the Gravina di Laterza gorge, and to the border with Basilicata. In 2015, just over 11,000 hectares (27,400 acres) of vineyards were registered as suppliers of IGT Puglia wines. Official production figures the following year were 5.45 million bottles. The terroir here is typical of Puglia: hot, flat, and dry. Only closer to the coast is there any respite from the famous sun of Southern Italy, which is rightly nicknamed Il Mezzogiorno. The landscape is dominated by olive groves on a scale incomparable to any other part of Italy. Puglia produces nearly half of Italy's olive oil. Vineyards are also fertile here, despite the European Union's viticulture plans at the end of the 20th century. Nevertheless, their number is still overwhelmed by the enormous number of olive grove sites.
