We already offer many types of Appassimentos on our wine sites: From Puglia, of course also from Veneto, for example even the quintessential Appassimento Amarone, but we did not yet have one from Piedmont. So we chose the Cascina Ghercina Barbera trying Appassimento with the tasting team. And lo and behold, that was yet another completely different kind. Another grape, a different structure, a different climate. So… Go for it! The Cascina Ghercina Barbera Appassimento is being added to the range and is now also available for purchase from us. For this wine, 50% of the grapes are harvested by hand and dried in baskets for 40 days so that color and aromas can develop further. The other 50% remains in the vineyard for a natural ‘appassimento’ and is harvested later. Both parts of the harvest are processed into wine separately.
And where does all that care and dedication lead? Well, a whole lot of deliciousness! And that without exaggeration! The wine has a deep dark color, and the nose is full of cherry jam with whole sprigs of bay leaf and thyme stewed along. Sultry, sun-drenched, and sure! Black cherry and blueberry jam on the palate too. Finishes with a hint of chocolate/liquorice cake. Infinite depth, keeps going, doesn't stop... not on its own. Concentration is the keyword here. Don't pair this with a skinny chicken, but do it with large leg of lamb with a good rub! Grilled Picanha works fine too. Can even be served at Juventus-AS Roma. But the Cascina Ghercina Barbera Appassimento always wins!
Cascina Ghercina was founded in 1871, and throughout the generations, a clear mission has been established: only homegrown produce and quality first. Our own grapes from our own vineyards first! In 2002, an additional 8 hectares of vineyards were purchased, situated on south-westerly slopes in the heart of the Barolo region. These lie 360 meters above sea level (and very importantly! above the mist line, therefore more sun!). Furthermore, they built a 5,000 m² wine cellar at that time, which is partially underground. This increased the storage capacity to more than 15,000 hectoliters. The estate also has vineyards in Langhe, Alba, Roero, Asti, Monferrato, and Gavi. A leading house from this region, with the Cascina Ghercina Barbera Appassimento as a magnificent example!
